In this latest installment of our Dodson’s Japanese PartsWorld blog we will be talking about fuel system parts. Your car runs on either petrol or diesel, so essentially, your car’s fuel system is similar to the cardiovascular system in your body. The fuel pump is your heart and the filler plus the fuel lines are your veins. Ensuring that this system is in good working condition is essential to keep your car running. It also contributes to engine power, fuel efficiency and your car’s emission levels.
Let’s dig deeper into the main parts of the fuel system:
● Fuel door, gas cap and filler tube - When you fill up at the petrol station, this is how fuel gets in your car. Petrol travels down the filler tube towards the petrol tank.
● Petrol Tanks - This is the holding tank for your fuel. It has a sending unit which tells your gauge how much petrol is in the tank. Some petrol tanks have a little bit more complicated set-up, depending on the model of the car. Some car models already have the fuel pump integrated in the petrol tank.
● Fuel Filter - Clean fuel is critical for performance. Depending on your car model, the fuel filter can be washable mesh, a paper element, stainless steel or synthetic material. It’s job is to make sure no contaminants enter the fuel pump, injectors and fuel lines. Rust and dirt can can cause corrosion and weaken or damage your fuel system.
● Fuel Pumps - The fuel pump is found either in the petrol tank, attached to the engine or on the frame rail sitting between the engine and the tank. The purpose of the fuel pump is to deliver fuel from the tank into the injectors which then goes to the combustion chamber. There are two types of fuel pumps: mechanical (used for carburetors) or electronic (used for electronic fuel injection)
● Injectors - Check your car manual or your car manufacturer’s website if your car has fuel injectors. Most cars made after 1986 already have them or basically any car that does not use a carburetor. Fuel injectors have nozzles and valves that atomises the petrol. The fine mist of fuel is sent into the combustion chamber. This is controlled by an electric signal from the ECU (electronic computer unit)
